James Henry Derr III, age 77, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away on December 30, 2021. He was born on September 8, 1944 to James Henry and Sara Joyce Derr. He is preceded in death by his father James Henry Derr, Jr. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 44 years Linda Derr; daughter: Vanessa Lively; grandsons: Jeremiah and Nico Lively; his mother: Sara Joyce Derr; two brothers: John Derr, Jeff Derr (Laura); Niece: Sarah; Nephews: Zachary, Aaron and numerous extended family members and friends.
Jim will always be remembered as a kind, gentle beautiful blue eyed humble soul with a twinkle in his eye who cared more for others than himself. He was a man of deep faith who truly believed his life was better when left in God’s hands and that all would work out for the best. He loved and appreciated nature and taught so many people how to appreciate God’s beautiful gift of plants, and wildflowers and nature in general. Jim was a very cheerful giver and an unassuming quiet and humble person, always deferring to others. He had a true thirst for knowledge and was an avid reader and a lifelong learner.
Retired from his career as a social worker, Jim continued to reach out to those in need. He generously gave of himself and his money. He was an active member of the Salesian Cooperators, who serve alongside the Salesian Sisters. Jim was a huge supporter of Home Street Music, a nonprofit organization helping to build community, restore confidence, reclaim dignity, and empower individuals who have experienced homelessness.
Jim came alive anytime he was listening to music, singing along with his favorite songs and feeling no inhibitions about singing at the top of his lungs, just enjoying himself. He was a gift to us all and we loved to see him happy and enjoying his life to the fullest, even towards the end of his life.
Our Celebration of Jim’s life will begin on Saturday, January 29, at St. Luke Church 4603 Manitou Dr, San Antonio, TX 78228 with the rosary at 10 a.m. followed by the celebration of life Mass and a luncheon in the parish hall immediately following the church services. Interment will be on Monday, January 31 beginning at 10 a.m. at Resurrection Cemetery, 11624 Culebra Rd., San Antonio, TX 78253.
