At 17, he joined the United States Navy and was stationed on the USS Essex and USS Yorktown. He later joined the United States Air Force. He was a radar controller and an air traffic controller. Henry was stationed around the world including Victoria, Texas; Kelly AFB, Texas; Chaumont Air Base, France; Torrejon Air Base, Spain; U-Tapao Air Base, Thailand; Randolph AFB, Texas; Richards-Gebaur AFB, Missouri; and Scott AFB, Illinois. During his final tour at Communications Command, he was a vital member of the Inspector General’s staff. During his 30 year military career, he earned the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. Upon retirement, he served another 20 years with the Federal Civil Service at the Defense Mapping Agency in St. Louis, Missouri.
He earned a Bachelor’s of Arts degree at Southwest Texas State University and a Master’s degree in Counseling and Education at the University of Missouri St. Louis.
He was married to Bertha Rivera Galan in 1956. They divorced in 1981.
In 1988, he married Catherine Ann Galan, nee Gallagher who preceded him in death on 10 March 2020.
He is survived by his children Mary Louise Harper, nee Galan; and Andrew Henry Galan. He has four grandchildren: Lesley Reveles, and Anne, Sean and Connor Harper.
He was an avid learner with a proclivity for languages, traveling, reading, word games, and loved nothing better than firing up the grill and spending time with the vast circle of friends he and Cathy enjoyed during their 32 years together in St Louis, Missouri.
