Gloria was born at home on June 29, 1961, to Roberto and Maria Luisa Hurtado in San Antonio, Texas.
Gloria attended Thomas Jefferson High School and graduated in 1979. Her time as a Mustang included time as an officer for the Lariats. Gloria helped coordinate the card section for all the Mustang events. That coordination also meant recruiting family to attend events, haul around giant cards, and participate in the Jefferson Mustang spirit.
Following high school, Gloria attended the Vocational Nursing Program through SAISD. She completed her LVN certification in 1980 and went on to begin her life-long career as a nurse. She began her career at Metropolitan Hospital, now known as Methodist Hospital Metropolitan. She held nursing positions at area medical facilities, agencies, and non-profits, ultimately having to end her career in 2022 while working at Alpha Home, a non-profit, drug and alcohol treatment center.
Gloria may have been a nurse by trade but that also was part of her personal life. Gloria did not hesitate to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it – you could be happy or sad, sick, or well. She was there. Gloria would drop by or send over vitamins or a cooked meal or coordinate a schedule to help with housekeeping or daily chores. Gloria would even bake a birthday cake to let you know she remembered your special day.
Gloria’s family was everything to her. She was a one-of-a-kind, loving, and special person. And although it makes perfect sense why she would be called upon, she will be forever missed.
Gloria is preceded in death by her brother Ricardo Hurtado, Grandparents, Liborio and Inez Hurtado and Severiano and Maria de Jesus Rivera.
Gloria is survived by her parents, her sisters Linda Hurtado and Regina Hurtado Walla (God Daughter); her brothers Roberto Hurtado Jr. and Carmen; Celso Hurtado and Sandra and Rafael Hurtado; nieces: Kara Menchaca, Cynthia Hurtado, Stephanie Hurtado (God Daughter), Jordan Hurtado, Gabriela Hurtado and Katherine Hurtado (God Daughter); nephews: Larry and Steven Garza (Godson), Robert III, Erik and Ricardo “Ricky” Hurtado and Jude Walla and many great-nieces, great-nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and her beloved Australian Cattle Dog, Max.
Gloria will be cremated and services will not be held; Gloria requested that a Celebration of Life be held in her honor at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please make any memorial contributions to Alpha Home, ABODE Contemplative Care for the Dying or directly to the family.
