Geraldine (Geri) Marie Turner left to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 16, 2021. Geri’s story began on September 20, 1962 in Paris, France when she was born the youngest of five children to Gerald and Belia Calhoun. Geri returned to her mom’s hometown as a toddler when her dad was stationed at Fort Sam, in San Antonio. Geri was raised in San Antonio, graduating from Churchill High School, later marrying Leroy Edward Turner Jr. and giving birth to her son Leroy Edward Turner III (Trey). Geri’s passions in life included her family, her friends, her dogs, and all animals, especially those she loved and cared for in her dog grooming business, Geri’s Gentle Grooming, LLC.
Geri was a talented dog groomer with a special talent for handling dogs with special needs, and was somewhat of a “dog whisperer”. She was loved by her clients, especially the four-legged ones. Many of her clients actually looked forward to their visits with Geri, and because she cared for some of them for many years, whenever she lost one, she took it almost as hard as the “parents”. The family appreciates the outpouring of love and support shown by Geri’s clients, and while many of them considered her a friend, all of them appreciated the special place she held in the community. Geri’s son Trey, along with her other employees, intend to continue her legacy.
Geri was a unique and special person who loved life and the Lord, who never met a stranger, and who was an eternal optimist. Geri was a fierce fan of the Cowboys and the Spurs, and never missed a game. She loved the lake and the beach, and her favorite “get-away” included camping on the beach and hosting her friends at the lake. The new love of her life was her grandson Kingston (King), and she loved being his “Nana”.
Geri’s optimism persisted during her battle with COVID-19, including enduring a 3 week stay in the ICU at Methodist Hospital at Stone Oak. Throughout her battle she kept in touch with her clients, ensured her loved ones that she was going to “beat this thing”, and tried her best to keep up the spirits of the people caring for her; that is who she was. The family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses at Stone Oak Methodist ICU for the care they gave Geri, especially since her family could not be with her, because she felt that she was among friends.
Geri was preceded in Heaven by parents Gerald and Belia Calhoun; Godparents (Aunt) Carrie Barrera and Philip Moke; former husband Lee Turner; Aunts Mary Silvas, Bennie Partida, Lupe Rodriguez and Uncles Johnny Barrera, Manual Barrera, and Carlos Barrera, and their spouses. The recent loss of her mother, along with the previous loss of her dad and godparents, hit Geri especially hard, and it is of great comfort to the family to know that she is with them once again.
Geri leaves behind son Trey Turner, and his family Laura Valdez Turner and son Kingston Turner; siblings Carrie Kuhn, Charlotte Walker and husband Randy, Claudette Lee and husband Greg, Ed Calhoun and wife Melinda; nieces and nephews to whom she was the “cool aunt”: Justin Kuhn, Amanda Gomez, Cameron Walker, Ryan Lee, Courtney Lee, Connor Lee, Colton Calhoun and Austin Calhoun; great nieces and nephews Abby, Bradlee, Marlee, Emmitt and Stella. She leaves behind her Aunt Joan Barrera and many cousins. Other family members also include Bobby Turner and Debbie Miller. Geri also leaves behind many friends whom she considered family, including Jo Ann Hendley and Roxie Hagen, and her beloved constant four-legged companion, Brandi.
An outdoor Memorial Service honoring Geri is scheduled at Hops and Hounds Indoor/Outdoor Restaurant, located at 13838 Jones Maltsberger Rd, in San Antonio. This location was chosen so that all those who love Geri may attend, including her many furry four-legged friends. Please feel free to wear your Dallas Cowboys or San Antonio Spurs shirts in Geri’s honor.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that you donate to Pause for Paws Inc., a no kill animal rescue mission that Geri was involved with. You can donate on their Facebook Page or call for alternative methods, 210-378-5373.
