George Wayne Burdine, beloved husband, father and grandfather, went to be with the Lord at the age of 70 on June 24, 2016 at his home surrounded by family. He was born on July 10, 1945 in Baltimore, Maryland to Severe and Rosa Burdine. He was baptized and confirmed at Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Baltimore, Maryland.
Following high school, George enlisted in the United States Air Force along with his lifelong friend, Albert Hisley. George attended basic training at Lackland Air Force Base. He was later stationed at Bergstrom Air Force Base in Austin, Texas and promoted to Sergeant. George was assigned to clothing retail sales at the base and excelled. He was once featured in a military newspaper modeling a new Air Force service dress uniform. In 1967, he earned the Air Force “Serviceman of the Year Award”.
Austin, Texas was where George met his loving wife, Olga Ramos. They met on a blind date and later married on September 2, 1967. Following George’s military service, he continued his retail career with Woolco from 1970-1981 and Marshall’s Department Stores from 1982-2001. He earned the national “Operational Store of the Year” in 1999 and “Store Manager of the Year in 2000” at Marshall’s. In 2001, George decided to retire from Marshall’s. He changed professions a
nd became a school bus driver for North East Independent School District. He thoroughly enjoyed caring for the children and the parents adored him.
George was a member of Beitel Memorial Lutheran Church for more than 30 years where he served as a church council member, Sunday School teacher, Confirmation teacher, Men in Mission member and choir member. In his spare time, he enjoyed traveling across the United States and Canada. He and Olga traveled to 48 states often visiting national parks. He also enjoyed watching his four grandchildren’s school and sporting events.
George is preceded in death by his parents; sister Harriett Coon; brother Kenneth Burdine; and aunt Hattie Hubbel. He is survived by his wife Olga Ramos Burdine; daughters, Virginia Lee Daniels and husband Greg and Charlotte Eleanor Rhodes and husband Brant; grandchildren Claire Nicole Daniels, Waylon Robert Daniels, Lauren Michelle Daniels, Lawson Dewayne Rhodes; brother Alan Burdine and wife Deborah; sister Jerlice Hein; sister-in-law Margaret Burdine; as well as numerous extended family members.
The Burdine family wishes to thank family and friends for the many calls, visits, prayers and the generous gifts of food, cards and flowers. The family also wishes to thank the Audie L. Murphy Memorial VA Hospital for their care, as well as, Alamo Hospice who cared for George during his final hours. May the Lord bestow many blessings upon Linda, Stephanie and Lee of Alamo Hospice; Dr. Pedroza, Dr. Sepulveda, Dr. Dacus, Dr. Salih, Dr. Jones, Jenny and the nursing and ancillary providers at the VA.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 7, 2016 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 8, 2016 at Beitel Memorial Lutheran Church, 2515 Austin Hwy., San Antonio, TX 78218. Interment will follow at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Beitel Memorial Lutheran Church.
