He loved his Familia, adventures, karaoke, wings, snow boarding, watching movies, hitting the beach, hanging out with friends, and living life to the fullest.
His greatest accomplishment was being the Father of Mirsayah Wasnuk. She was the center of his universe and the pride of his life. Everything he did was for his love of her.
Waz enlisted in the Air Force in 2000, joining the elite and shenanigan-filled career field known as EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) and rapidly expanding his family circle.
Gabe was a team leader in Iraq and Afghanistan, defusing hundreds of IEDs and destroying thousands of explosive hazards. He protected his team, countless brothers and sisters in arms, and the people he came to protect, earning the Bronze Star for his courage and the Purple Heart for wounds he sustained. He was the epitome of his profession and left a lasting legacy in the EOD community. His service took a toll on his body and mind and he was medically retired in 2015.
His exploits and cheeky shenanigans are legendary. Anyone who knew him for more than 5 seconds came away with a Waz story. His laughter and smile were infectious, as was the positivity he brought to any situation. He naturally had an ability to bring joy to those around him and bring people together.
He is survived by his daughter, Mirsayah Wasnuk, sisters Cherylanda Wasnuk and Madi Lewis, brother Joseph Lewis, nephew Tony Perez, father Adolph Torrez, mother Renate Lewis, step-father Terry Lewis, ex-wife Ariel Quesinberry, grandmother Bettye Karbo, his Texas family, his friends, and the EOD community. This was his Familia.
A public viewing will be held Saturday, October 17th, at the Sunset North Funeral Home at 3 o’clock p.m., followed by a celebration of life at 6 o’clock p.m.
