Mrs. Flura Mae Poole, the youngest of eight children, was born to the late Porter and Nancy Waters on March 8, 1925, Mexia, Texas. She attended Webb Chapel Public Schools, in Limestone County, and graduated Valedictorian from Woodland High School in 1944.
After high school, Mrs. Poole entered college at Prairie View A&M College (Prairie View A&M University as of August 27, 1973). She completed four years of study and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics Education, with a minor in Library Science. Later, she re-entered school at Prairie View A&M University, then transferred to Baylor University, Incarnate Word University, and subsequently to Our Lady of the Lake University, where she earned certifications in elementary and special education.
On April 24, 1948, Mrs. Poole was united in holy matrimony to the late Trachanzie Pedro Poole. From this union of 48 years, they were blessed with five children; four sons: Trachanzie Pedro, Jr. (deceased), Donald Ray, Millard Carl, David Joel, and one daughter: Beulah Faye.
For quite a while, Mrs. Poole was a stay-at-home mother and supported her husband during several federal government job transfers. She soon understood that employment in public school was a challenge, as most schools only employed one home economics teacher and one librarian. Therefore, she took on temporary employment as a college bookstore cashier, a telephone operator, and as a substitute teacher. It was during this time she decided to return to school and earned certifications in elementary and special education. Unfortunately, Mrs. Poole never worked her desired job as a home economics teacher. However, she was permanently employed as a college librarian at Prairie View A&M University for many years. Towards the latter of her employment years, she was employed as an elementary and special education teacher at Indian Creek Elementary School in the Southwest ISD, San Antonio, Texas.
Mrs. Poole professed a strong and abiding faith in Jesus Christ at an early age. As the family relocated several times throughout the state of Texas, in support of her husband’s occupation, she always sought a church in which to study and worship The LORD wherever they lived. Their final move bought them to Seguin, Texas, which became home. Here, she joined membership with Second Baptist Church in 1972 where she actively served on the Women’s Mission and the Mission Chorus. She was also a contributor to the church newsletter where she submitted articles and poems. Due to her declining health, Mrs. Poole was required her move to New Braunfels, Texas, to live with her son and daughter-in-law. Afterwards, she transferred her church membership to Covenant Community Church on April 27, 2014. She continued to serve faithfully, as her health permitted. She regularly attended Sunday School, Worship Service, and mid-week Bible Study. Mrs. Poole was such an inspiration to Covenant Community Church, that she was designated “Mother of the Church” by Pastor Earl Grant, Jr. on October 2, 2016.
Mrs. Poole was a devoted and loving wife and mother. She enjoyed reading (especially her Bible), cooking, writing, needle work, and quilting. Her favorite pastime was gardening. She loved planting flowers, trees, and vegetables. She also enjoyed trips to the library with her great-grandchildren and spending time reading to them. She was a strong advocate of education, and encouraged her husband and all five of her children to pursue a college education, of which all attended and graduated from Prairie View A&M University, with the exception of her youngest son who attended and graduated from Texas Lutheran University.
Mrs. Poole leaves to cherish her memory three sons, Donald Ray Poole, Sr. (wife-Carolyn) in New Braunfels, Texas, Millard Carl Poole (wife-Pamela) in Houston, Texas, and David Joel Poole in Seguin, Texas; one daughter, Beulah F. Poole, in Austin, Texas; six grandchildren, Donald Ray Poole, Jr. (wife-Carla) in Helotes, Texas, Amberly D’Anna Poole in Dallas, Texas, Trachanzie Dwayne Poole (wife-Leanna) in Sterling Hts., Michigan, Eboni Poole in Houston, Texas, Crystal Poole in Houston, Texas, Michael Poole in Houston, Texas, and eleven great-grandchildren, Donald Ray Poole, III in Helotes, Texas, Jeremiah Nathaniel Poole in Helotes, Texas, Harrison John Poole in Helotes, Texas, Ethan Jaxon Poole in Helotes, Texas, Mylah Grace Poole in Sterling Hts., Michigan, Alexis Williams in Houston, Texas, Brandon Williams in Houston, Texas, Marcus Williams in Bryan, Texas, Christian Williams in Houston, Texas, Jayla Crathin in Houston, Texas, Braylon Jackson in Houston, Texas, and four great-great grandchildren, Elijah Williams in Houston, Texas, Ava Williams in Houston, Texas, Abigail Williams in Bryan, Texas, Leilani Williams in Houston, Texas; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and very dear friends.
