On 5 January 2012, on a quiet early San Antonio evening, a beautiful soul went home to Heaven. Dora Solis Romo, age 84, passed over to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Dora had a long, wonderful, love-filled life. She had a strong and steadfast faith in God, a positive, hopeful attitude, and a generous loving nature.
Dora was born on 4 March 1927, in the small coastal town of Matagorda Texas. She was one of 12 children born to Antonia and Jose Solis. She had a simple yet loving childhood, filled with fun and adventure. After high school, she moved to the “big city”, San Antonio, Texas, to start her career.
While in San Antonio, she met a “big city boy”, Robert Romo. After a couple of years, during which Robert tried everything possible to win her affection, Dora finally agreed to a date. And even though she had to pay for her meal on that first date (a slight misunderstanding), they fell madly in love! Dora and Robert married on 13 June 1948, in Palacios, Texas. They had two daughters, Roberta (Bobbie) and Robin. Bobbie married Tony Martinez, and they gave Dora (Mamo) two wonderful grandchildren, Robert (happily married to Donna Ivers), and Kristin (happily married to Brandon Morgan). Kristin and Brandon recently gave Dora her first great-grandson, Elijah Antonio Morgan, born on 17 December 2011.
Dora, Robert and the girls were among the first members of St. Dominic’s Catholic Church. They participated in many Church activities, especially parish festivals and sporting events.
After a long career in Civil Service at Kelly Air Force Base, Dora went on to be a mentor to elementary children for 10 years, becoming an “adoptive grandma” to many young children in need of love and affection. Dora loved to be active! She was a great bowler, loved bingo and the slot machines of Vegas, and playing the lotto; and she never turned down a scratch-off ticket! She was an avid San Antonio Spurs’ fan, always losing her voice from screaming at the games!! She loved to dance, especially to Big Band music with her hubby. She also loved Spanish music, especially Mariachi music, and did a “mean grito” herself!
Dora was a truly exceptional woman. Always smiling, always hopeful, she was a true Christian, who trusted God at all times. Loving Wife, Mother, Mamo, Great-grandma, Sister, Aunt, Friend. She will be greatly missed and loved forever. But we take great solace knowing that she is home and eternally happy with our Lord. And with God’s grace and mercy, we all hope to join her someday in His Heavenly Kingdom. Until that day, we simply say “we love you always, and we’ll see you on the other side!”
Visitation will begin on Monday, January 16, 2011 from 5:00pm to 9:00pm with a Rosary being recited at 7:00pm at Funeraria Del Angel Roy Akers. We will depart the funeral home at 8:30am on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 for a 9:00am Mass of Resurrection at St. Dominic's Catholic Church. Interment to follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
Arrangements under the direction of Funeraria Del Angel Roy Akers, San Antonio, TX.
