Carol A. Gould was a loving wife, sister, mother, grandmother, and friend. She left this life shortly before midnight on July 18, 2022, after a three-year struggle with Parkinson’s Disease and associated ailments. She was 81 years old.
She was born on December 19, 1940, in Framingham, Massachusetts to Bill and Arline Holmberg and grew up in Ashland, Massachusetts. After high school she started dental hygienist school and later married Bob Gould and lived life as a military wife and mother. Carol and Bob had three children (Lorine, Gary, and Greg) and were stationed in California, Japan, Azores, Illinois and ultimately Texas after Bob was diagnosed with cancer in 1975. Bob passed away in early 1978 and Carol stayed in San Antonio to successfully raise her three children as a single mother. She worked as a medical receptionist and an office manager and continued in the same work when she decided to move to Chandler, Arizona in 1995 to live closer to family.
Carol was an artist at heart and more than anything else loved painting and flower arranging. She painted using oils, acrylics, and watercolors and would sometimes display and sell her work at various art festivals and venues or give paintings to friends. She also studied Ikebana for over 50 years. In Arizona, she belonged to three Ikebana organizations: Ikebana of AZ (President for 2 years), Sonoran Desert Sogetsu Study Group, and Ikebana International Sun Cities Chapter #167. She loved planning and displaying monthly arrangements and participating in the Ikebana of Arizona annual exhibitions at the Phoenix Art Museum. She also exhibited her arrangements at the Phoenix Japanese Friendship Garden during the annual Sonoran Desert Sogetsu Study Group Exhibition.
She was well-traveled and visited many states and foreign countries with friends and family. Her favorite was visiting Cape Cod and collecting sea glass washed up on the beaches. She loved animals and always had pet dogs, rabbits, and once had a pet bird. She would bake a batch of chocolate chip cookies for any occasion and always when her grown kids were coming home for a visit.
Carol was a breast cancer survivor and faced all challenges with grit.
She was preceded in death by her husband, E.R. (Bob) Gould, Jr., and her parents Arline (Leland) and Bill Holmberg.
Carol is survived by her brother Ed Holmberg, her children Lorine and Bob Ciero, Gary and Kelly Gould, Greg Gould, her grandchildren Kiley, Michael, Greta, and Ethan, and her extended son Chuck Williams and family.
A burial service is scheduled for Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, Texas, on September 2, 2022, at 10:15 a.m. at Shelter No. 2.
In lieu of flowers for the burial and to celebrate Carol’s love of flower arranging, buy yourself, your loved ones, or a friend an arrangement of flowers and enjoy them in her memory.
