Born in Laredo Texas, he was preceded in death by his parents, Usvaldo Lerma Martinez and Maria Teresa Perales Martinez; sister, Rosa Angelica Contreras; father in law, Manuel S. Hernandez; and sister in law, Hope H. Casares.
Survived by his wife of 50 years, Margaret H. Martinez; children: Carlos Javier Jr. & Belinda Martinez, Manuel Usvaldo Martinez, Melissa Ann & Santiago Montes, and Michael Joe Martinez; grandchildren (16) Samantha Perez, Carlos Martinez, Ashley Martinez, Clarissa Martinez, Dominic Martinez, Emily Martinez, Adelita Madrigal, Joe Brian Madrigal, Marissa Martinez, Desmond Martinez, Jalissa Montes, Christina Montes, Nathan Martinez, Maximus Martinez, Michael Martinez Jr, and Jordan Martinez; great-grandkids: (7) Xavier, Joslynn, Alizay, Josiah, Emerald, Evelynn, and Evanie; his mother, Teresa Martinez; brothers: Victor Osvaldo & Alicia Martinez, Roberto & Diana Martinez, Alberico Martinez, Martin & Veronica Martinez, Victor & Albina Martinez, and Gerardo Vazquez; sisters: Maria Teresa Gonzalez, Amalia Martinez Villareal, Lourdes & Gustavo Martinez, Reyna & Michael Lopez, Rosa & Robert Trevino, Cleotilde Trevino, Maura & David Salazar, and Anna Martinez & Juan Flores; mother in law, Julia M. Hernandez; brothers in law: Manuel & Diana Hernandez, Johnny & Christina Hernandez, and Vincent Hernandez Sr.; sisters in law: Janie & Robert Citriano, Rosa Hernandez, and Tonia & Julio Martinez; uncle, Pablo Martinez; and aunt, Maria Perales, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended relatives and friends.
Carlos and Margie moved to San Antonio Texas, 34 years ago from Dallas Texas, where he began working at the Flea-Mart. He worked there for 33 years and enjoyed every moment; helping people and making new friends were what he loved most. He had a huge heart and always made sure that he could help you in any way possible. Most people will remember him by his loud voice and his huge smile, or seeing him zoom by in and out of the aisles in his blue scooter with flames or his golf cart. Carlos was also a Tattoo Artist known as “The Laredo Kid” and he began his love for tattoos over 50 years ago. Learning from some of the best, he become very well known in Laredo, Texas; Dallas, Texas; and San Antonio Texas for his art. Carlos had a love for Tattoo’s and always said “Tattoo’s come from the heart.” He tattooed 95% of his family and his nieces and nephews couldn’t wait till they were of legal age to go see their Tio Carlos for their first tattoo. He was an amazing Grandfather to all of his grandkids and was always there for each of them. Carlos leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews and many family and friends that will miss him dearly. Carlos will always be remembered by his huge heart and his huge smile.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, March 8, 2020, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with the Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m., at Trevino Funeral Home, 2525 Palo Alto Road. On Monday, March 9, 2020, a procession will depart the funeral home at 9:15 a.m. for a 10:00 a.m. Mass at St. Clare Catholic Church, 7701 Somerset Road. Interment will follow at San Fernando Cemetery II.
