She was born in Rocksprings, TX on April 3, 1933.
Benita married Ruben Sierra on November 27, 1954.
She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education at Our Lady of the Lake University and taught in San Antonio ISD for 27 years.
Benita served her community for 40 years as a precinct chair person. She was a lifelong Democrat and worked tirelessly for various candidates over the years including President Barack Obama and Governor Ann Richards. Benita also was a member of the San Antonio Democratic League and the President of the Alamo Democrats. Her servant-heart also led her to serve on the San Antonio Literacy Council; the San Antonio Public Library Board; and the Bexar County Historical and Conservation Board.
She was a member of St. Leo’s Parish, the Guadalupanas, and Legion of Mary Auxiliary. She also taught GED and ESL classes.
She is preceded in death by her son, Ruben Dario Sierra. She is survived by her husband Ruben Sierra; daughter, Regina Ramos and son-in-law, Daniel Ramos; daughter, Juliana Sierra Perales and son-in-law, Pete Perales; son, Fernando Sierra and daughter-in-law, Annie Fuentes Sierra; daughter, Patricia V. Barrios and son-in-law, Jose “Carlos” Barrios; and daughter, Isabel Sierra Shepard and son-in-law, Robert Shepard; 14 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; two great, great grandchildren.
