Born April 23, 1930, died November 19, 2016.
Gandhi famously said; “I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” The only way he could make such a bold statement is that Gandhi had never met Carrie Lyons. Here was a woman who lived her faith in every way. She took great comfort in her faith in the past dark year of her illness. But for a lifetime before that she served her church by bringing communion to shut ins, volunteering and cooking for Church functions, and working as a Eucharistic Minister, worshiping her God through deeds and actions, not just words.
Carrie joined the Air Force and met John Lyons in 1951; they were married for over 49 years. Since earlier in life when she made so many military moves with John, to the last 25 years she has lived in San Antonio she leaves behind friends all over the United States. Many of those friends were standing by at the end, showing love and respect to a truly remarkable lady who left a legacy of love behind her. One of her newest friends, Alicia Martinez, cared for her in her home for the last eight months and made life for Carrie so much more comfortable and more manageable for her daughter Paula.
Carrie was also a very creative person who worked with her hands for practical and artistic endeavors. From a young age, she was an expert seamstress, producing clothing for her family, and for the last 20 years she has made thousands of pieces of children’s clothing for the littlest ones at the San Antonio Children’s Emergency Shelter. Over the years, she also knitted, crocheted, embroidered, worked with ceramics and even seashells, making gifts for so many people. And we cannot forget that Carrie was an extraordinary cook and baker. But the pastime that she seemed most passionate about was quilting, which she took up over 35 years ago. Lucky are we who have been gifted with hand-quilted wall hangings, pillows, and bed quilts made with loving care by Carrie.
Carrie was preceded in death by her husband John, her daughter Patricia, and grandson Austin. She is survived by her daughter Paula Lyons and son-in-law Jeffrey Meffert, her sister Lorraine Hugenal, her grandchildren Lanie Palan, Nathalie Pollner, and Ian Meffert; her great grandchildren Olivia Palan, Lily Heil, Maxwell Palan, Dane Pollner, and Leon Meffert.
Carrie, Mom, and Nana will be fondly remembered and sorely missed by family and those many friends whose lives she touched so gently and lovingly.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 30th from 6-9 pm at Sunset Funeral Home; 1701 Austin Hwy, San Antonio, TX 78218 with a Rosary to be recited at 7 pm. The funeral Service will be on Thursday, December 1st at 10 am at St. Helena’s Catholic Church, 14714 Edgemont St; San Antonio, TX 78247. Condolences may be offered at www.sunsetfuneralhomesa.com.
