Barbara J. Vance (formerly known as Barbara J. VanWinkle), 83, died on March 5, 2011. She was born April 15, 1927, in Chicago, Illinois. Barbara graduated from Cornell of Iowa with a degree in Speech and Drama, and received a Masters Degree in Adult Education from Denver University, with additional studies at Northwestern University in Chicago. She was an instructor at Trinity University from 1950 to 1955, and worked as a Curriculum Specialist at the English Language Center, Defense Language Institute, Lackland AFB, from 1956 until retiring in 1986. Barbara also served as an instructor for the American Institute of Banking for 16 years. She was a past president of Chapter EU, P.E.O. Sisterhood; an active member of the Assistance League of San Antonio; a life member of the Blue Bird Auxiliary of the Methodist Hospital; and a volunteer at the Green Door Consignment Store for St. Luke Episcopal Church. Barbara was pre-deceased by her husband of 53 years, James C. Vance, and is survived by a son, Glenn Forrest Vance of Austin and his wife Debbi Vance; a daughter, Marion Elizabeth Burch of Houston, her husband Doug Burch, and a grandson; and an adopted son, Reginald Buford of San Antonio, his wife Ramona Buford, and a granddaughter and another grandson. A memorial service will be held at 11 A.M. on Saturday, March 26, 2011, at St. Marks Methodist Church, 1902 Vance Jackson, San Antonio, Texas 78213.
