Antoinette Menchaca, age 90, went home to the Lord on Friday, June 28th, 2013. She was born February 5, 1923, Antoinette Toscano, the 7th child of Juanita González Toscano and Pedro Toscano, of Floresville, Texas. A child of the Depression, Antoinette knew the value of hard work and frugality. She worked diligently at other jobs until she achieved her goal to become a teacher and her career spanned 42 years. She is preceded in death by her parents, six siblings, their husbands/wives and two husbands. Toni also has numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved very much. She also loved attending birthday parties, weddings and other family functions. This independent woman was a wife of 37 years to Manuel A. Ramos, an avid outdoor cook, who preceded her in death. Manuel and "Toni," as she was called had two children together, Manuel A. Ramos, Jr. (Mercedes G. Ramos) and Irene Marie Rodríguez (Greg Rodríguez). Irene and Melecio Villanueva gave Toni her first grandchild, Marisa Alaniz (David Alaniz). Irene and her husband, Greg Rodríguez, would go on to give her two grandsons, John Paul Rodríguez and Andrés Alfonso Rodríguez. Marisa would later present Toni with two great grandchildren, John David Alaniz and Jonathan Alaniz. A number of years after the death of Manuel Sr., Toni remarried, to Gabriel Menchaca and they enjoyed almost seven years together until he was also called home to the Lord. They traveled and represented AARP as Hispanic recruiters in SW Texas, a "job" they truly enjoyed. They were avid dancers and often could be found, on Sunday afternoons, at the Roaring 20's, a place where they could meet friends, and listen and dance to Big Band Music. After Gabriel died, Toni returned to the classroom, substitute teaching until the age of 80. Funeral arrangements are the following: viewing will take place at Roy Akers at 515 N. Main beginning at 5:00pm on Monday, July 8th. The rosary will begin at 7:00 pm. On Tuesday, July 9th, at 10:00am, a funeral Mass will be held at St. Brigid's Catholic Community located at 6907 Kitchener St. Those who wish to pay their respects before the Mass can do so beginning at 9:00 am in the Narthex at St. Brigid's. Burial will follow at San Fernando Cemetery II. The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers that a donation is made in her name to the Alzheimer's Association . Thank you! Special Note: We want to thank the wonderful, loving and caring people, nurses, doctors, CNAs and care providers at La Villa de San Antonio, Christus Santa Rosa Hospital, Emeritus at Hamilton-Wolfe and Vitas Hospice for their tireless efforts to provide a safe and nurturing environment for Toni over the last ten years.
