Anastacio “Cocono” G. Gomez, Jr., 73, of San Antonio, courageously finished his final battle here on earth on January 23, 2015. He was a wonderful and generous husband and father and we already miss him. Retired SGM Gomez was born in Goliad, TX on May 17, 1941. He was raised in Brownsville, TX and graduated from Brownsville High School in 1960. At age 15 he joined the National Guard and was called to active duty in 1961 because of the Berlin Crisis. He loved his country and voluntarily served two tours in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star for Meritorious Service. He honorably retired in San Antonio after 28 years in the U.S. Army. Always the patriot, Cocono had a lifetime membership in the VFW serving our veterans. He was an avid pool player who enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Anastacio and Rita Gomez and brothers, Antonio “Tony” Gomez and Luis Zarazua. He is survived by his wife, Maritza Gomez; children, Brenda Smith (Wayne), Coppell; Malinda Headrick (Gary), Georgetown; Eloy Gomez (Gloria), San Antonio; stepchildren, Eduardo Perez (Vanessa), Louisiana; Jorge Perez (Denise), Houston; David Perez, McAllen; 17 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Minnie Cisneros (Justo), Brownsville; Anita Gonzalez (Roy), San Antonio; Tim Gomez (Gloria), Brownsville; Roberto Gomez (Hilda), Brownsville; Daniel Gomez (Yolanda), Round Rock; Victor Gomez (Eloise), Houston; Dolores Sanchez (Domingo), Houston; Eduardo Gomez, Houston; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The visitation will begin on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. followed by a veteran’s last salute at 6:45 p.m. Services begin at 7:00 p.m. at the direction of Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, TX 78218.
The graveside service and interment with military honors will be held on Wednesday, February 4, 2015 at 9:30 a.m. at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.
