Alonzo M Hernandez Sr., 88, a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather & brother went to be with the Lord on June 25, 2023. He was born on February 13, 1935, to Julio Hernandez Sr & Maria M (Hernandez) Jimenez. He was the 9th of 14 children. He was the proud descendant of his great grandfather Ramon Hernandez who was one of the original wagon trailblazers in San Antonio.
At the age of 14, he dropped out of school to work as a shoe shiner downtown to help his mother support his siblings. At the age of 19, he enlisted into the United States Air Force and proudly served our country. Our father loved telling us his stories about his time in the military overseas, like the time he fell asleep on a train in Germany and woke up in Paris. After he completed his years in the Air Force, he went on to work at Kelly Air Force Base where he retired after 30 years as an aircraft welder.
In April 1959 he married the love of his life, Candelaria, and together they started their family, first their daughter Velma followed by their son Alonzo Jr. As the patriarch of our family, everyone knew that his family was what he treasured most in his life. We will forever be grateful to him for all the life lessons and will cherish the memories of the endless conversations about the importance of family, hard work, and with his infamous witty remarks and antics we will never forget all the laughs and joy he brought to our lives.
He is preceded in death by his parents Julio Hernandez Sr & Maria M (Hernandez) Jimenez. His siblings Julio Hernandez Jr, Minerva Morin, Connie Fernandez, Rodolfo (Rudy) Hernandez and Richard Hernandez. He is survived by his wife Candelaria M. Hernandez, Daughter Velma H Castaneda (Daniel), Son Alonzo Hernandez Jr (Sandra). Grandchildren: Linda Michelle Ortegon (Richard), Michael A Apolinar (Stephanie), Meloney J Apolinar (Tommie), Nicole D Romero (Michael) and Stephanie A Hernandez. Great grandchildren: Matthew & Michael Ortegon, Austin & Aidan Apolinar, Aaron & Briella Romero. His sister Hortencia Obadal and numerous nieces & nephews.
