Alfredo de la Garza was born February 25, 1929 in San Antonio, Texas to Alfredo de la Garza Sr. and Marciana Macias de la Garza. He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Maria Muñoz and Aurora Perez; and son, Valentín de la Garza.
He is survived by his wife, Julia Malacara de la Garza; sister, Concepcion Rodriguez and children: Guadalupe Lay (Robert), Alfredo de la Garza Jr. (Mary), Victoria de la Garza, Lucy Fernandez (Abel) of North Carolina; 13 grandchildren: Norma Gutierrez, Kimberly Lay, Jonathan Lay (Pam), Nathan Lay of California, Veronica Lay, Avel Fernandez (Sarah) of Tennessee, Noel Fernandez of Austin, Jessie Renee Fernandez, Midori Fernandez of Austin, Marcus de la Garza (Sandra), Julia V. de la Garza of Michigan, Emma de la Garza of Michigan, Valentín de la Garza of Michigan and 13 great grandchildren. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, other family members and friends.
Alfredo joined the U.S. Navy during World War II at the age of 15 and was stationed in San Diego, CA as an apprentice seaman. After being Honorably discharged from the Navy he took on several jobs. Alfredo worked for a pest control company before becoming a Batchman for Bexar Asphalt Company. He then hung up his work boots, put on a suit and tie and became a customer service representative for Texas Type Inc. He continued working part time into his 80’s.
He married Julia Malacara on August 14, 1949 after meeting at the “Polkitas” on Gen Mc Mullen Drive. They were married for 68 years, 9 months and 14 days. They had five children. As a husband and father, he was a good provider and taught his daughters to use the proper tools to change the car tires and oil, lawn maintenance, carpentry, and other life skills as he taught his sons to do. He was always available to provide transportation or be of service to his grandchildren and anyone who needed assistance or a kind word.
Alfredo was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church. He was an avid reader and enjoyed reading different genres. He was a great cook and gardener. He enjoyed
hunting and shared his hunting skills with his sons and grandsons and enjoyed the camaraderie of his hunting buddies. He was a humorous person who always had a joke to tell. His quick wit and generous nature will be missed and long remembered. We love you and miss you already, Dad and Wuelito.
Visitation will be held 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Thursday, May 31, 2018 at Funeraria Del Angel Trevino, 226 Cupples Rd. with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Procession will depart from the funeral home on Friday, June 1, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. for a 12:00 p.m. Mass at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church. Interment San Fernando Cemetery No. 2.
