Alex E. Tovar beloved father, brother, uncle, grandfather and great grandfather, entered eternal rest on April 22, 2015 at the age of 97. He was born on July 17, 1917 in Waelder, Texas. Alex now reunites with his wife Frances V. Tovar of 54 years of marriage. He is survived by daughter Mary T. Flores (Alex), sons: Jesse V. Tovar (Carmen), Joe V. Tovar , Raymond V. Tovar (Diane), and Ralph V. Tovar (Kathy); sisters Janie Ramirez (Abel) and Lina Galan; 12 grandchildren: Alex Flores III, Jacqueline Roof (Russell); David, Daniel, Michael, and Joe Anthony Tovar; JoAnn Gibson (Jason); Jacob, Valerie, Kimberly, and Alexander Tovar,and Felicia Cabello (Christian) ; 9 great grandchildren Alex IV, Noah, Alexis and Mia Flores, Anthony, Melanie, Nicholas and Cristianna Tovar and Aislynn Gibson, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Alex was also an American Patriot. He was a WWII combat veteran as an anti-aircraft artillery gunner who first saw action on the beaches of the Bataan peninsula, Philippines on Dec. 8th 1941. He later surrendered with General Wainwright after the Battle of Corregidor. He survived a total of 3 ½ years as a POW of the Japanese. Alex survived some time at the Cabanatuan Japanese prison camp, a sea journey on a “hell ship” on to Mukden, Manchuria, China (Hoten POW camp) where he spent the duration of the war working as a sheet metal mechanic at a Mitsubishi Zero production plant. There he did his best to create defects, since he pretended he knew nothing about bending metal. His release in August 1945 returned him to his loving family and ultimately to his one true love, Frances.
The family will be receiving guests at Funeraria Del Angel Roy Akers on Friday, May 1, 2015 at 5:00 pm with a Rosary being recited at 7:00 pm. Then a 9:15 am departure from Roy Akers funeral home to the funeral Mass which will commence at 10:00 am on Saturday May 2, 2015 at St Phillip of Jesus Catholic Church 150 E. Lambert St. San Antonio, with interment to follow at San Fernando Cemetery #2.
