Abel Hernandez, age 81, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, July 11, 2018 at his residence in San Antonio, TX. He was born April 17, 1937 in San Antonio, to Eleuterio Hernandez and Antonia (Cabrera) Hernandez. Abel was preceded in death by his brother, Raul Hernandez. He is survived by wife, Margarita (Carrizalez) Hernandez; daughter and son-in-law, Marbel and Steve Ricks; son Rene Hernandez; sister Genevieve (Hernandez) Lopez; brothers Santiago and Alfonso Hernandez; and several nieces and nephews.
Abel served his country proudly for 11 years in the U.S. Air Force and fought during the Vietnam War. He received a bachelors degree at Southwest Texas State University and graduated Cum Laude in 1980. He continued his career in federal service as a civilian engineering technician at Kelly and Wright-Patterson Air Force Bases. Abel retired as a Production Manager in the Maintenance Directorate with 34 years of federal service in 2001.
Abel was a devoted husband to Margarita and a loving father to Marbel and Rene. He was always known by his friends and family as a very honest and loyal person. His closest friends gave him the nickname, “Honest Abe”, that perfectly characterized his professional and personal relationships. Abel had a quick-witted sense of humor that brought joy and laughter. His two passions in life were cooking and drinking wine with his family and friends. He took pleasure in preparing meals to be enjoyed by all. Abel always had the perfect bottle of wine for any type of celebration to be shared by his family and friends. He will be truly missed. Visitation will be at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home, 6321 Bandera Road on Thursday, July 19, 2018 beginning at 9:00 A.M. with a funeral service at 10:00 A.M. Interment will follow at a later date at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
