He was born October 8, 1935 in New Orleans, LA to Robert H. McCarty, Sr, M.D., and Louise Morgavi McCarty. The family moved to Lubbock, TX where he grew up. Bob graduated from Lubbock High School in 1953 and Texas Tech University before attending and graduating from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston in 1960. ---30 years after his father had done so too. While he was completing his medical residency in Houston, he was drafted and became a flight surgeon in the US Airforce--(He was on active duty during the Cuban Missile Crisis.)—He married Marilyn Sue Lightsey in 1961 and they moved to Great Falls, Montana, where their first child, Robert Raymond McCarty, was born. The family returned to Texas where, after he completed his medical residency in Houston in 1966, he established a private practice in Corpus Christi. He was always grateful to Dr. Maurice Nast for inviting him to share office space during his first years of private practice, and he remained in Corpus Christi for almost 15 years, until he moved to San Angelo, TX with his new wife Loretta Clark and family in the late1970’s. He then began his practice at San Angelo Community Medical Center as an Internal Specialist where he remained for almost 30 years. As he moved towards his eventual retirement in 2016, he also worked in several Medi Center locations, as well as Shannon Clinics in various locations as a Family Practitioner for a few short years before deciding to officially retire. His medical career spanned over 40 years of his life and he was very passionate about his profession. He continued to read his medical books until just recently, actually wearing the binding off as they were so worn from much love and use from him. His love of books and learning never ceased, even learning Spanish at ASU when he was in his late 70’s.
Dr. McCarty married Reiko Harada Robertson on May 7, 1988. They enjoyed a very active life together that included traveling, cruises, dance club, bridge, Thai chi, and to Bob’s chagrin and Reiko’s prompting, many exercise classes.
Bob’s sister Evelyn has been a special bright spot in his life in their recent weekly face time calls that has allowed them to rekindle a wonderful closeness even at a distance.
“Doctor Bob” as some of his caretakers fondly called him, and his wife Reiko, moved to the Baptist Retirement Community in 2003. There they lived together first in independent living, then to the Highrise, then eventually to assisted living and ultimately nursing care. The family would like to extend a very special thanks to Baptist Retirement Community for all the years of love and care that has been shared, and we could not have cared for them better without you all.
