Born on April 8, 1929, in Fort Worth to Nicholas Anthony and Elizabeth Hamilton James, Nick graduated from San Angelo High School before becoming a veteran of the Korean War and earning a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Texas. He worked in family businesses, operated as a sales representative for an industrial engineering firm and later earned his living as a real estate investor.
Never a man defined by career, he was better known for the people he touched, both professionally and personally. His sense of humor brought him laughs; his kindness and compassion earned him respect. Possessing an inner toughness that few would suspect, he was a fighter for the things and people he believed in.
Although he never fully mastered retirement and he kept his concerns going until the end, he travelled the world with his wife of 54 years, Nancy Salmon James. He loved exploring and experiencing the far-flung corners of the planet and toured every continent, from the wilds of East Africa to South America and China. As a young man, he was active in the theater, including a lead role in the Angelo Civic Theatre’s production of “Inherit the Wind.” Later in life, as others often accepted the status quo, he embraced new technology and enjoyed leading others of his generation into the world of computers.
He leaves to cherish his memories his wife Nancy, his children Mary James of San Angelo; Susan James of Carrollton; and Richard James and his wife Joanna of Ladera Ranch, Calif., along with his treasured grandson Travis James. He will also be missed by the dog he and Nancy recently rescued, Chico. For family, friends and the many other lives he touched, there will be a memorial service at First United Methodist Church on Friday, Dec. 2, at 2 p.m. Those wishing to honor Nick are asked to donate to the San Angelo Performing Arts Center, Wesley Soup Kitchen, Samaritan Center or the charity of their choice. The family will be welcoming friends to share memories at Nick and Nancy’s home on Thursday, Dec. 1., from 2 to 6 p.m.
