On May 25, 2013, Jerry Sessom of San Angelo, Texas went to be with His Lord and savior Jesus Christ. His funeral service will be held at Johnson Street Church of Christ on Tuesday May 28th at 10:00am with Tommy King and Chris McCurley officiating. Interment will be at Cox Cemetery at Milburn, Tx at 3:00pm. Mike Sessom will be conducting graveside services. He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Norma Jo Henderson Sessom. Jerry was born in Brady, Texas on September 24, 1935 to Joseph Oscar and Annie Laura Fischer Sessom. Jerry attended Brady school and was a member of the 1953 graduating class. He attended San Angelo Junior College on a football scholarship where he was a captain and quarterback of the Ram football team. He continued his education and football career playing quarterback at Sul Ross University where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree, then went on to earn a Master’s of Liberal Arts Degree at Southern Methodist University. Jerry was an outstanding educator, football coach and administrator for several school districts throughout Texas for over 30 years. He worked at Region 10 Education service center and served as secretary and president of the Texas Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association. He was chosen to write a manual for the bus driver training program for the state of Texas. He especially was proud of his years spent at Lake View High School where he served as head coach and Athletic Director of the 1961 Chiefs and led his team to the first district championship in school history. Jerry and this special group of players and coaches bonded on several levels and still keeps in contact today. They were inducted into the first class of the Lakeview High School Hall of Fame. He was honored as west Texas coach of the year while at Lakeview.
Jerry was an outstanding athlete where he was a leader in football, basketball and track. He qualified for the state track meet several times in running and pole vault for Brady High School. Jerry worked hard all of his life and believed that when someone started something they should finish it.
Jerry was an avid outdoorsman where he loved to hunt, fish, camp and grill. He loved his Texan heritage and even ranched cattle in Abilene for a time. Jerry had a special gift of making people feel special, was a great story teller and never met a stranger. Jerry also had a talent of being able to play several musical instruments with his family. His greatest love was his Lord and Savior, where he served as a deacon and an elder in several congregations in the Church of Christ. This was closely followed by the love of his life, his high school sweetheart, best friend, confidant Norma and his children, 8 grandson’s and great grandchildren. Jerry considered his greatest legacy that all of their children, grandchildren and their spouses are believing Christians and are raising his great grandchildren in Christ.
He is survived by his wife Norma; Daughters Pam Stewart her husband Gregg of Houston; Paula Isaacks her husband Lewis of McKinney; Chanda Justice her husband Steve of San Angelo; Son Mike Sessom and his wife Darla of McKinney; eight grandsons and three great grandchildren. Brother Donald and wife Carol, sister in law Jane and sister in law Cecelia. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Ewell, Douglas and a sister Marjorie.
The family would like to thank Dr. Anthony Demoray and his staff at the dialysis center; Stella of Concho Home Healthcare and staff of the Shannon Hospital; for all of the love and care extended to precious dad, husband and grandfather.
