He was born May 26, 1948 to Eugene and Pauline Long of Knott, Texas. Larry graduated from Big Spring High School and then went on to get his Bachelor of Arts degree at Angelo State University.
He was employed by TxDot for over 30 years eventually retiring in 2003; he then returned to work at TxDot for another 6 years. He started working for the State in San Angelo in 1973 while attending college. In 1986, he transferred with the State to Austin, and finally ended his career with them in Fort Worth as a Safety Officer/ Aquatics Inspector.
In 1975, he married Judy Cross. They met while attending ASU and shared 35 years together raising 4 wonderful children; Trenton, Trevor, Trey and Tara Long. In 2008, they separated.
In 2011, he married Karen Martin. They lived together in North Richland Hills, Texas until his passing.
One of his favorite things was building barbecue pits and cooking experimental dishes, “road kill” as he liked to call it. He loved dabbling in photography and talking about the weather.
In college he was a member of Alpha Kappa Lambda (AKL), and was grateful for the life long friendships with his fraternity brothers and sisters.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Gene and Pauline Long. He is survived by his brother, Marshall Long of Big Spring, Texas; his four children Trenton Long of Columbus, Georgia; Trevor Long of Austin, Texas; Trey Long of Round Rock, Texas; Tara Long of Hutto, Texas; his 4 granddaughters, Mykayla and Myranda Long of Clarksville, Tenn and Mackenzie and Madison Packer of Hutto, Texas, as well as the mother of his children Judy Long of Hutto, Texas and his wife Karen Long of North Richland Hills, Texas.
Funeral arrangements will be held at Johnson Funeral Home in San Angelo, TX. The viewing will be on Monday, April 5th from 5:30-7:30pm. The Celebration of Life service will be held on Tuesday, April 6th at 10am in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel.
The Celebration will be in true Larry fashion, informal attire...funny t-shirts and funny stories.
