Charlie Woodson Henderson Jr., age 88, of San Angelo died Sunday, November 17, 2013. He was born November 19, 1924 near Anson, Texas to Charlie Henderson Sr. and Clarice Faustine Thornton. He married Mary Liniouse Cundiff shortly before he joined the United States Navy on November 26, 1943 and went through boot camp in San Diego, California. He was proud to have served in the U.S. Navy World War II Submarine Corp and served on the USS Atule 403 in the South Pacific. He was a qualified submariner and holds a submarine combat pin. He was also assigned to temporary submarine relief crews on the Orion and Sperry. He was discharged from the U.S. Navy in Boston, Massachusetts on January 12, 1946.
Charlie served 26 years in the U.S. Border Patrol and throughout his career was stationed in El Centro, California, Florida and a number of Texas towns. Charlie patrolled on horseback and flew helicopters. He had many experiences as a border patrolman and was a gifted storyteller, always eager to share his colorful tales to those that would listen. He retired from the U.S. Border Patrol on March 12, 1977.
After retirement he served eight years as County Judge of Presidio County in Texas. One of his proudest accomplishments was working with the Texas Historic Commission to restore the county courthouse which was originally built in 1886.
Charlie was an active member of the community and belonged to a number of organizations. He sat on many committees and served on many boards throughout his life. He joined the Lions Club in 1957 and was a lifetime member. He was active in Lions work for 50 plus years only slowing down as his health declined. He is past president of the Marfa Lions Club and also the West side Lions Club in 2007-2008. He was a member of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees and Friends of San Angelo State Park. Charlie was also an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed being the District 6 Director of the Texas Trappers and Fur Hunters Association in the 1990s. He has been honored with numerous awards and honors; too many to list.
He was preceded in death by his parents Charlie Henderson Sr. and Clarice, his brother Virgil, his first wife of 50 plus years Liniouse, and daughter Charlotte Henderson.
He is survived by his loving wife Dorothy (Dot) Corbell; son Charlie Henderson III and his wife Anne from Kyle, TX; one granddaughter Sharon Thompson and her husband Jeff of Wimberley, TX; grandsons Guy Bowen and his wife Shannon from New Braunfels, TX, Bret Bowen of Austin, TX and Chad Bowen and his wife Kari of Round Rock, TX; and great-grandsons Jake and Johnnie. Also surviving him are his brothers Arvis and James. He is survived by his sisters in-law Mary Ann Beck and Andy Beck.
Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at Johnson’s Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. AV Henderson officiating. Pallbearers for the service will be from the Lions Club.
