Irene Maverakis Work, beloved wife, mother, sister and aunt died peacefully at home in Salt Lake City on January 27, 2016. She was born May 3, 1928 in Sunnyside, Utah, the daughter of Mike Maverakis and Alice Balavos Maverakis. She grew up in Salt Lake City. In 1957 Irene married William George Work, the love of her life to whom she was married for 48 years. She was an accomplished golfer and traveled extensively in the US, Europe and Asia, passions she shared with her husband and daughter. She also loved Asian Art and fashion and modeled for ZCMI and other organizations, such as the FAA Auxiliary. Family and friends remember her as an exquisite and meticulous cook, known particularly for her Greek pastries, especially her kourabiethes and baklava. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
She is preceded in death by her husband, William George Work, her father, Mike Maverakis, her mother, Alice Balavos Maverakis, her sisters Lula Bukosky and Mary Winders and her brothers Emanuel Maverakis and Mitch Maverakis. She is survived by her daughter Marianne Work and her brother Nick Maverakis.
The family would like to express their thanks to Rocky Mountain Hospice. Funeral services will be held at the Holy Trinity Cathedral, 279 South 300 West, on Friday, February 5th at 11:00 AM. A visitation for family and friends will be held at the Wasatch Lawn Chapel, 3401 Highland Drive, on Thursday, February 4th from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
