“It’s all about family”
Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away peacefully on November 29, 2015. He was 90 years old. Born March 6, 1925 to Herbert Hartland Halliday Sr. and A. Camille Woodbury in Chicago, Illinois. He was the oldest of five children.
Dad grew up in the Avenues where he enjoyed roller-skating on the steep streets and fishing in City Creek Canyon. He enjoyed spending summers at his boyhood cabin on the Provo River, roaming, fishing, and spending time with family and friends on the Jordan ranch at Hailstone Junction.
He graduated from East High School a year early and enlisted in the Army Air Force, where he served three years during World War II. Upon returning home, he attended the University of Utah, earning a B.S. in Political Science and J.D. of Law, graduating the same year as his brother, Paul. He practiced law in Salt Lake City for 40 years, specializing in property law in the Halliday-Watkins firm.
Dad loved working in Yellowstone the first two summers after returning from his service in WWII, when the fishing was fabulous. He courted his future wife, Gloria M. White during this time, and they married August 18, 1949 in the Salt Lake Temple. They recently celebrated 66 years of marriage. He was a devoted husband and father of six children. He loved his 13 grandchildren and was proud of his 13 (and counting) great-grandchildren.
Dad was an avid outdoorsman; enjoying fishing, hiking, and hunting. His memories of helping his father collect river rocks for the cabin’s chimney inspired him to build his own cabin below Lewis Peak. Dad loved collecting rocks and purple glass. He loved fine art.
Herb was a devoted home teacher. He served as Elders Quorum president, ward mission leader, served in the Sunday School Superintendency, and was a High Priest instructor.
He is survived by his loving wife, Gloria, four of his children: Greg, Laura (Lloyd) Willardson, Teresa (Coy) Clawson, and Heather (Gary) Alger, his brother Paul M. Halliday and sister Ann Turner. Preceded in death by his sons H. Hartland Halliday III and Todd Lee Halliday, and his brothers Dean and Tom.
Funeral services will be held on December 5, 2015 at the Holliday 1st Ward on 2065 East 4675 South at 12:30 pm with a viewing from 11:00 am to 12:15 pm and the evening prior at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 Highland Drive, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
