On July 19, 2016, we lost a good one. Our loving and generous mother (and grandmother and great grandmother) and devout Jazz fan, Dorothy Young Hardy, died of issues incident to aging. Dorothy was born on October 12, 1924 as the 12th of 14 children of Bryant Lynn Young and Edith Haslem Young. Dot grew up in Salt Lake City enjoying her large family and many friends graduating from South High School in 1941. After a wonderful courtship, Dot married Bert Hardy in Elko, Nevada. They settled on the west side of Salt Lake City where they lived for the remainder of their lives. Bert preceded her in death, passing in 1980. Bert and Dorothy had four boys Kenton Bert Hardy (Linda), Brad DeWitt Hardy (Jolie), Clayton Lee Hardy (Cheryl) and Lyndon Cole Hardy all of whom survive her. Dot also has eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren who will dearly miss her. Dorothy also is survived by one sister, Phyllis Nealon now residing in Cleveland, Ohio, and many nieces, nephews and their families.
Dorothy had a kind and gentle spirit which continued through her last days. She always had a “nice reminder” (a “Dorothyism”) of what her rambunctious kids should (or should not) be doing. She worked many years with Keith Romney & Associates and became a member of the “extended” Romney family such that Dot always had her own season ticket for the Jazz games sitting in the middle of the Romney clan for many, many years. When she moved into Highland Cove retirement community she insisted on decorating her room with the Jazz memorabilia she had collected for many years. Thanks to the wonderful caregivers at Highland Cove who patiently cared for Dot over the last couple of years and to the caregivers with Brighton Hospice who made her comfortable over the last few weeks of her life.
The Hardy Family welcomes you to a graveside service that will be held on Friday July 22, 2016 at noon at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park 3401 So. Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah. The family will greet friends and family at a viewing to be held at the Chapel at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park beginning at 10:00 am on Friday. Following the burial we will return to the chapel where we can continue our “catching-up” together with some light snacks.
