Barbara A.Powell, 85, passed peacefully into God’s care on Saturday, August 3, 2019 in Rehoboth Beach, DE, after a period of declining health. For the past few years Barbara has resided at Brandywine Senior Living Center at Seaside Point where she was well-known and cared for by both friends and staff.
Barbara was married for 63 years to William G. Powell, who predeceased her three years ago. Barbara and Bill met while Bill was serving at Randolph Field Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX. He was the love of her life. After marrying in San Antonio, they moved to CT to settle down. Bill managed the family business, Rollin H. Powell and Son, Inc., a paint and wallpaper store in Waterbury, which eventually expanded to two additional stores in Woodbury and Southbury.
Upon retirement, the Powell’s moved to Dunedin, FL where they resided for 23 years. They relocated to Rehoboth Beach six years ago in order to be closer to family. Barbara and Bill treasured time spent with friends no matter where they lived. Their visible and ever-present love and devotion toward one other served as a model and a gift to their children in their own marriages.
Barbara was the loving mother of four children: Susan (and Gary) Borchard of Franklin, MA, Steven (and Leslie) Powell of Litchfield, CT, Betsy (and Frank) Cruice of Dagsboro, DE, and Leslie (and Douglas) Petty of Pleasanton, CA. Additionally, Barbara was grandmother to 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She was lovingly known to all as “Nannie” and was notorious for always being able to whip up a meal for family anytime they popped in. Lighting up the grill, chatting around the table, or just floating in the pool allowed family to stay connected.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Joe (Krisch) Alexander of San Antonio, TX. She has two sisters, RoyAnn Smith of Inman GA and Martha Huckaba of San Antonio.
Barbara was a strong Christian who loved the Lord with all of her heart. She was a lifelong church member and regular participant no matter where she lived. She attended bible studies, helped with childcare or Sunday School, and sang in the choir. She especially enjoyed singing hymns and patriotic songs. Barbara found pleasure in oil painting and antiquing. She especially enjoyed exploring the backroads of Connecticut during long car rides with Bill.
A service of inumment will be held at the convenience of the family at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro, DE. At the request of the family, memorial contributions may be made in Barbara’s name to either VITAS Hospice, 30265 Commerce Drive, Suite 202/203, Millsboro, DE 19966, or to The Hope Center at Mariner’s Bethel UMC, 81 Central Ave., Ocean View, DE 19970.
