Roy Arthur Woodard

Born August 4, 1932 in Ackerman Mississippi to John and Onnie Woodard, Roy was the youngest of 11 children.

Roy was known by his friends and family when he was young as “Whitie” because of his blond hair.

When Roy was 10 years old both of his parents passed away and he went to live with his older sister Earline and her family. Roy loved working with his hands and at the age of 13 he started repairing and selling bicycles in a shed behind their house in Starkville Mississippi. He also mowed yards for extra money.

Roy attended Schools in Mississippi before joining the Natural Guard in 1949. He also served as a Sgt with the US Army during the Koran War. He was honorably discharged in 1955. Later that same year Roy moved to Oregon.

Roy married his first wife in 1956 and they moved to Louisiana where he worked as a brick mason. In 1957 the hot weather became overwhelming for both of them and one night they decided to move back to Oregon.

He went to work for Persy’s Nursery in Salem. In 1959 Roy began working at Hogg Brothers in the appliance repair business. He enjoyed it so much that in 1968 he opened his own business “Woodard’s Appliance” where he worked until he retired and sold the business in 1994. After retirement Roy went back to what he enjoyed doing as a teen repairing and selling bicycles. He was known in the neighborhood as the “Bike Man” Roy enjoyed working in his yard He always had lots of good tomato’s and other vegetables’ from his garden.

He was an avid Fisherman and also enjoyed Deer and Elk Hunting.

Roy was preceded in death by his first wife Darlene Rambo-Woodard of whom they had 2 Children. His second wife Elma Burgess-Woodard, 2 brothers and 6 sisters.

He is survived by his 2 Daughters, Cindy Woodard (Fiance Glenn Huiett Jr & their son “Bubba”) of Salem, and Debbie (Bob) Quitoriano of Salem. Sisters Audell Miller of Oregon City, and Ethel Roach of Tigard, and numerous Nieces’ and Nephew’s.

We wish to thank Robert and Angela Estrada of the Sweet Bye-N-Bye and their wonderful Staff for caring for Daddy with Loving care and Dignity in the final years of his life. Thanks also go to Odyssey Hospice.

A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 Friday April 27th at Howell-Edwards-Doerksen with Rigdon-Ransom chapel of the garden, 1350 Commercial St. SE, Salem, OR
