Bob was born in Eugene, Oregon to Cecil and Inez Sargent on April 11, 1929. He married Dorothy Stillwell on June 6, 1948 in Walla Walla, Washington and they were able to celebrate their 73rd wedding anniversary on June 6, 2021. Bob attended San Jose Bible College (now William Jessup University), graduated from Northwest Christian College (now Bushnell University) in Eugene, Oregon and received two Master’s degrees from Butler University, Indiana. Bob and Dorothy raised 8 children and were a part time home to many other family and friends over the years.
Bob spent most of his adult life in Christian Ministry as a pastor and as an educator. In addition to pastoring the Vernonia Christian Church in Vernonia, Oregon he also taught school at Washington Elementary School and Mist Middle School. In between their three different times in the Vernonia ministry, the Sargent’s developed lifelong friends in their ministries in Bell, California and at San Jose Bible College, San Jose, California. He was the Academic Dean at SJBC for 13 years and besides teaching classes and doing his administrative duties, he aided SJBC and other small colleges attain accreditations to make their college credits transferrable. At retirement, he moved to Grass Valley, California then to Lakeside, Oregon, but mostly, he and Dorothy enjoyed their retirement traveling in their motor home, particularly to River Lodge on the Colorado River where Bob spent time doing the activities he enjoyed most, golfing and painting.
He is preceded in death by his parents; seven siblings; sons, Ernest and Wayne Sargent; daughter, Jeanie Haas and grandson, James Brooks. He is survived by wife Dorothy; children: Peggy Stone, Ann Cecil, Annette Eggert, Dennis Sargent, and Steve Sargent; 14 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. Services will be held at Turner Christian Church, Turner, Oregon on Saturday, July 17, 2021 at 2:00 pm.
