Glenn E. Boyle, affectionately known as "Grumpy," passed away on July 28, 2024, at Salem Hospital in Salem, Oregon, at the age of 88. Born in Wessington, South Dakota, on September 2, 1935. Glenn was the beloved son of Alvin C. Boyle and Johannah F. (Gogolin) Boyle.
Glenn attended Wessington Elementary school in South Dakota from 1941 to 1943 before the family moved to Oregon where he spent his formative years in Salem, Oregon. In Salem, he attended the two-room Eola Elementary School and Liberty Elementary School, Leslie Junior High, graduating in the last class of Salem High School in 1954. He attended Oregon College of Education (now Western Oregon University) for a year. Glenn dedicated his career to the Oregon Department of Transportation, where he worked from 1956 until his retirement in 1990.
Glenn married Marilyn Shafer on August 31, 1957, and were together for 66-years. Together they raised three children, Kevin, Laurie, and Tracy.
Glenn was a “Ford” man for 70 years. His love for antique automobiles was more than a hobby. He enjoyed restoring a 1926 Ford Model-T, a 1930 Ford Model-A Pickup, and a 1956 Ford F-100 Pickup. Glenn also served as a docent at the Evergreen Aviation Museum enriching countless lives around the world as he shared his knowledge of WWII warbirds.
Post-retirement, Glenn and Marilyn enjoyed traveling with multiple cruises and tours, including adventures to Alaska, the Panama Canal, the Caribbean, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, and Austria. Their travels also included trips around the United States visiting nearly every state while attending Southern Gospel Quartet gatherings.
Glenn leaves behind a devoted wife Marilyn, children Kevin (Priscilla) Boyle, Laurie Boyle, and Tracy Boyle (Steve Ovens), grandsons Bryce (Esther) Boyle and Alexander (Sara) Boyle, and great-grandsons Landon Boyle and Isaiah Boyle, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, and siblings Chester, Orval, Donna Smith, Vera Moorhouse, and Janett Ann Boyle, but his spirit lives on through the values and memories he imparted.
Visitation will take place on August 16, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Howell, Edwards, Doerksen with Rigdon-Ransom Funeral Directors (1350 Commercial St SE, Salem, OR 97302). A celebration of life service will be held on August 17, 2024, at 2:00 PM at Turner Christian Church (7871 Marion Rd SE, Turner, OR 97392) followed by a reception to continue the celebration of his extraordinary life. There will be a private graveside service for the family.
