A native of Tunbridge, Vermont and former resident of Chesterfield, Missouri, he was the son of the late Everett William and Nina Belle Merrill Corwin. He was also preceded in death by two brothers and five sisters. Lew was a graduate of the University of Vermont and later taught mathematics. He joined the US Air Force to become a pilot and was stationed in Sembach, Germany. Lew served during the Korean Conflict, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam Era, attaining the rank of Lt. Colonel before his retirement from the Air Force Reserves. While serving in the reserves, he was Vice President of Human Resources for General Dynamics Services Company, retiring in 1990 with 33 years of service. Lew moved to Waynesville, North Carolina where he has resided for the past 25 years. He became a member of the First United Methodist Church of Waynesville, the Kiwanis Club, Haywood County Literacy Council and Habitat for Humanity. Lew was an avid golfer and enjoyed working in his yard.
Lew is survived by his wife of 36 years, Mabel Cashion Corwin; three sons, Matthew Corwin (Maureen) of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, David Corwin (Mary Jane) and Jamie Corwin (Robyn), all of St. Louis, Missouri; and eight grandchildren, Tommy, Danny, Teddy, Justin, Mikayla, Patrick, Shane and Michael Corwin.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at Hoffmeister South County Chapel, 1515 Lemay Ferry Road, St. Louis, Missouri. Interment will follow the service with full military honors conducted at Our Redeemer Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
