He was 92 and was married to Joann for more than 65 years.
Bob or “Cool Bob” as he was affectionately known, was born to Gerald and Margaret Weber in Dubuque, Iowa and grew up on the family dairy farm outside Viroqua, Wisconsin which provided him with endless tales of rural life. He attended Weber Elementary School where most of his fellow students were cousins whose families homesteaded in southwestern Wisconsin in the 1850s.
Bob graduated from Viroqua High School in 1947 where he played tennis, boxed, played clarinet in the band while keeping up with farm chores and making memories with his brothers. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1951 from the University of Wisconsin River Falls where he was a member of a college swing band and worked for room and board busing tables at a boarding house.
These early experiences provided Bob with bedrock values that guided him through life including love of family, faith, loyalty and duty, the importance and virtues of hard work and a sense of humor.
He enlisted in the US Army in 1951 and was commissioned a Lieutenant and served in Korea during and after the conflict. He served in the Signal Corps which provided a career path when he left the Army in 1955.
Bob became a telecommunications engineer and later manager for Pacific Telephone for more than 25 years. He worked on or led teams that designed major plant systems throughout Northern California. He loved to point to a telephone facility or device while driving about and say, “I designed that!” Bob later worked for several private companies converting large facilities to fiber optic technology including UC Davis and Lemoore Naval Air Station.
Cool Bob was a very involved Dad who coached Little League and softball and was a long time Boy Scout leader. He was active in civic organizations and activities including the Bell Pioneers, Toastmasters, and the Foothill Golf Center. Bob was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church.
Cool Bob was a mentor to many young people and the Weber household was always open to nephews, nieces, and friends of his children. He enjoyed simple times in the outdoors camping and fishing, playing games, visiting the farm, and sharing stories from his youth.
Bob was a good husband and father and especially loved his grandchildren, attending many of their activities. Bob’s great grandchildren brought an extra sparkle to his eye. He enjoyed his pet dogs and “grand dogs” in later years. We will all miss Grandpa’s ‘Have I Told You?’ stories.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents Gerald and Margaret, and brothers Don and Dale.
He is survived by his wife Joann and children Dennis (Beverly) Weber, Stephen (Valerie) Weber, Arlene (Kyle) Johnson and Jeff (Michele) Weber. Surviving grandchildren include Caitlin (Nick) Kosmider, Brian (Jane) Weber, Marissa Johnson, Jessica (Kolby) Lewis, Taylor Johnson, Jennifer Weber (fiancé Griffin O’Camb), and Jacob Weber. Surviving great grandchildren are Camden Kosmider, Charlie Lewis, and Lainey-Jo Lewis.
Graveside services are scheduled for Friday, April 29 at 2 p.m. at Calvary Catholic Cemetery and Mausoleum 7101 Verner Avenue Sacramento, CA
95841.
Remembrances can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or Operation
Smile, two organizations near and dear to Bob’s heart.
