While in Junior High her family moved to Sacramento. She was her class Vice-President, Treasurer and a member of the Rally Committee at C. K. McClatchy High School and graduated in June 1947. In January of 1949 she married her High School sweetheart, Bill Koontz. Bill enlisted in the United States Army and soon he and Joyce decided to make the Army their life. In 1954 Joyce gave birth to a son David and for the next 20 plus years, she served as an Officer's wife at their many assignments throughout the United States and Europe. She and David moved back to Sacramento in 1970 while Bill went off to Vietnam.
After nearly 30 years in service to their country, they retired and Bill started a new career with the State. During that time, Joyce cared for their elderly parents and other assorted family members, joined Sacramento's Tuesday Club and became a avid docent with the Sacramento Zoological Society. She worked on and attended many of their High School class reunions including the most recent, their 65th. After retiring from the State, Joyce and Bill moved to the foothills to enjoy the peace and beauty of Lake Wildwood in Nevada County where they made many new friends.
In 2006 Joyce and Bill moved back to Sacramento to be near their Son and daughter-in-law Melody. Joyce is survived by her son David (Melody), sister-in-law Elizabeth Clark, grandson Bill Koontz (Sharon), grandson Mike Harris (Jennifer) and great grandchildren Elaina and Ethan. Also surviving are six nieces and nephews as well as six god children. May she rest in peace after having lived a life filled with goodwill and the love of her family and many friends. Joyce will be interred with her husband Bill at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in a private service. Harry A Nauman & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
