It is with deep sadness that our beloved father, Dr. Donald Stanley Weaver passed away on September 5, 2024, at the age of 92. Donald was born in San Francisco and grew up in San Mateo. He graduated from Bellarmine College Preparatory School, attended the University of Santa Clara, and was accepted early to Creighton Medical School in Omaha, Nebraska. He earned his medical degree in 1956 and proudly served this nation as a military officer, achieving the rank of Colonel. He was a devoted servant of Christ in the Catholic faith, loving husband, father and grandfather, and known by his grandchildren as, “Papa.”
He practiced Internal Medicine and worked in Gastroenterology in private practice in Sacramento, CA from 1962 until 1969. In 1969, Donald earned his Masters degree in Public Health and Tropical Medicine at Tulane University, Louisiana. With this new certification, he accepted a unique opportunity to experience adventure and humanitarianism by moving his family to Zaire, Africa (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo). From 1970 to 1972, he served as the Chief of Internal Medicine at the General Hospital of Kinshasa. Donald loved working in Africa and genuinely believed that his actions were making a positive difference to those less fortunate. He also worked as a doctor on a hospital ship in Congo that traveled along the river to serve the villages along the shore, encountering extremely challenging ailments and diseases.
Upon returning to the United States, Donald moved the family to Reno, Nevada, where he continued to work as a physician at the Veteran’s Hospital in Reno. He closed out his federal career by moving back to Sacramento and working with the Veterans Administration Clinic in Sacramento. Upon retiring, he continued practicing as a physician by working locum tenens throughout the United States.
Colonel Donald Weaver’s military reserve career included service in the United States Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force. He served as Naval Dispensary Medical Officer, Pearl Harbor, HI in 1959 and 1960, and from 1961 to 1962 as the Marine Corps Dispensary Officer, Long Beach, CA. From 1976 until 1995, he was Commander and Flight Surgeon to the 940th Medical Squadron, Mather Air Force Base, CA. Tours of active duty include South Vietnam in 1968 and Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Shield.
Donald is preceded in death by his son, Dr. John Weaver.
