Barbara was born on October 9, 1960 in Birmingham, Alabama, to the late Gordon and Mary Helen Burton. She is survived by her devoted husband of 33 years, Stephen McHugh Jr.; two sons, Stephen “Steve” McHugh III (Sara) of Murfreesboro, TN, Nicholas “Nicky” McHugh (Nicole) of Atlanta, GA, and loving daughter, Allison “Allie” McHugh of Boston, MA. Barbara has one surviving brother, Barry Burton (Peg), numerous nieces and nephews, and a cherished granddaughter, Ava.
Barbara met the love of her life, Steve, at Auburn University, where she received her Bachelor’s degree in Business. Barbara and Steve loved each other dearly and enjoyed sharing precious moments and their life together. Barbara adored her family, and her family was her first priority. She made sure she supported her children in all of their scouting, soccer and extracurricular activities and anything they desired to achieve. Many of her favorite memories were of their wonderful trips to Disney World and to St. George Island.
Barbara worked for Protective Life in Birmingham and Confederation Life in Atlanta. She later became a pre-school teacher at Mount Pisgah Christian School, where she taught for 15 years.
Barbara was a woman of great faith, elegance, and dignity. She lived out her faith daily and was actively involved in the church and her Sunday School class. She was a faithful supporter of programs for the homeless, such as Heart Seekers, and Matthew’s Pantry to name a few. She was also an active member in the Bible Study Fellowship Johns Creek Evening Womens Class for over ten years, five years of which she served in leadership.
Barbara lived life to the fullest. Her smile could light up any room. She was graced with beauty and well known for her high style of fashion. Throughout her battle with cancer, she remained a humble servant of God. She kept a great sense of humor and a great attitude through it all. She instilled in her children and those around her to keep praying and keep the faith.
She was truly a person with a genuine heart for the Lord and a generous spirit. Her faith, spirit, life, legacy, and influence will forever remain in the lives of all who knew and loved her. She will be deeply missed.
The family would like to offer a special thanks to the Emory Johns Creek Winship Oncology and Infusion Center staff, and the Hospice Care team and nurses. They brought humanity and dignity to Barbara that made a difficult journey with cancer much more bearable.
In addition to the Visitation on December 17, family will also be holding a Celebration of Life ceremony in the new year at Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church.
