Friends and relatives of The Rev. Aubrey L. Hawkins are invited to attend his funeral services at The First Baptist Church of Roswell, 710 Mimosa Boulevard, Roswell, Georgia on Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at 2:00 o’clock. Dr. Ron Bradley, Dr. William Neal, Dr. James Ramsey, and Dr. James C. Wayne will be officiating.
Dr. Hawkins’ parents were Mr. and Mrs. Homer A. Hawkins of Roswell. He was pastor of Chattahoochee and Milford Baptist churches in Marietta and, locally, of First Baptist Church in Alpharetta. At that time he served as Moderator of the Roswell Association of Baptist churches. He then began a 50-year career in various offices of the Georgia Baptist Convention. Almost forty of these years he directed student work (now collegiate ministries) and coordinated work with Baptist colleges.
In Roswell, he was on the board of the Child Development Association of North Fulton and was a Hue Thomas Fellow of the Roswell Rotary Club, a program bringing students from abroad to study in Georgia. He was a life member of the mainland Advisory Council of the Hawaii Baptist Academy. The Baptist Student Center in Athens was named “The Hawkins Baptist Center, University of Georgia” in his honor.
Dr. Hawkins is survived by two daughters: Dr. and Mrs. James C. Wayne (Linda) of Pleasant Garden, NC, Mr. and Mrs. Alan Reddish (Carol) of Athens, GA, and one son, Mr. Lamar Wright Hawkins of Roswell, GA. He is also survived by two grandsons and two granddaughters: Michael and Dr. Julie Wayne of Advance, NC, Joel and Melissa Wayne of Beaver Dam, KY, Karen and Russ Jackson of Newnan, GA and Lindsay Reddish of Athens, GA. In addition he is survived by a sister-in-law, Mrs. Leila Hawkins of Roswell, GA, as well as nine great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Wright Hawkins, a grandson, Matthew Alan Reddish, and his brother, J. Harold Hawkins.
Memorials can be made to the Camp Hawkins Endowment Fund of Georgia Baptist Children’s Home, P. O. Box 329, Palmetto, GA 30268-0329. The family will receive visitors on Monday, June 25, 2012 at the Roswell Funeral Home on Mansell Road from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Green Lawn Cemetery in Roswell.
