Ralph F. Dainty passed away peacefully in Auburn, California on May 4, 2012. He was born April 9, 1933 in Detroit, Michigan to the late Lillian (Schenk) and James Dainty and was the youngest of 5 brothers.
Ralph graduated from Mackenzie High School in Detroit where he was captain of the swim team. After graduation, he was extremely proud to serve in the US Army 317th Tank Battalion as an MP, troop trainer, lifeguard and driver. Following completion of active duty in 1953 he served 8 years in the US Army Reserve.
After moving to southern California from Detroit, he worked for Southern California Gas Co. and then transitioned to employment with Bank of America. He retired in 1987 as a Vice President in the bank card sales division. The highlight of Ralph’s career with Bank of America was time spent living in Germany from 1973-1976 while working in Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and Great Britain.
Ralph took great pleasure and pride in his accomplishments as a woodworker and craftsman and was able to replicate fine antique pieces. He enjoyed hiking, fishing, gold-panning, motorcycling and sight-seeing. He was an avid reader and enjoyed etymology. While living in Tucson, Arizona from 1990-2007, Ralph explored and enjoyed the desert southwest after which he moved to northern California. Throughout his life he had a special love for the California gold country and took many trips with his family to explore the small towns along Highway 49. Above all, he treasured his family and friends and particularly enjoyed reunions and visits which he loved to host.
If he were to leave one last bit of wisdom with us it would likely be to do as he did: live life to the fullest...don't be a spectator!
Ralph is survived by his 6 children: Steve Riley of Belmont Shore, CA, Amy Gulbrandson of Auburn, CA, Mark Dainty of Lake Hughes, CA, Julie Hicks of Longmont, CO, Danny Dainty of Ackworth, GA and Jennifer Halasi of El Segundo, CA. He is also survived by his brother Calvin Dainty of Dearborn, MI and he will be greatly missed by his former wife and dearest friend Doris Dainty of San Gabriel, CA and his beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to Jakkidi Reddy MD & Staff in Roseville, CA, to Somerford Place Alzheimer’s Care in Roseville, CA, to Emeritus Citrus Heights in Citrus Heights, CA and to Vitas Hospice. We thank them for their care of Ralph and our family.
A private service is planned and the family requests remembrances be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org).
