William Culpepper

William Daniel “Paw Paw” “Bill” Culpepper, age 90, of Rome, passed away on Friday, October 11, 2024. William was born in Eufaula, Alabama on January 6, 1934, the son of Early Dewitt Culpepper and Eva Boland Culpepper. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Louise Mobley, Mary Doughtie, Lorene Gamble, Catherine Faircloth; his brother, Dewitt Culpepper; his beloved wife, Kathryn Roberts Culpepper, whom he married in 1960.

Bill is survived by his children, Scotty Culpepper (Lou Ann), Susan Moss (Mike), and Lisa Brewer; his grandchildren, Abbie Bannister, Carlton Duvall, Candace Johnson, Dani Shell, Kati Overbey, Ali Nix, Ezra Brewer-Tackett, and Emily Mather. He was blessed with 14 great grandchildren as well.

Bill graduated from Eufaula High School in 1953 and enlisted in the United States Army in 1955. He served his country in the Security Agency in Alaska. After attending the University of Alabama and graduating from Troy State College, he and Kathryn moved to Rome in 1965. Bill began his career as a claims representative with State Farm Insurance having retired in 1996.

He was an active member of Garden Lakes Baptist Church where he served in many roles including deacon, Sunday School teacher and chaplain of the Ray Club. Bill also served as a mentor at Garden Lakes Elementary where his daughters taught and was affectionately known as “Paw Paw” by the students.

He was a generous, kind and humble man with a witty sense of humor who loved to tell jokes! He loved God, family, friends and Alabama football! Roll Tide!!

The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 17, 2024 from 10:00 am until 11:00 am at Garden Lakes Baptist Church followed by a graveside service at 11:30 am at Oaknoll Memorial Gardens with Dr. Jimmy Gentry officiating. American Legion Post 5 Honor Guard will present military honors.
