Charlotte Shields Hardwick Harris died September 30 after a brief illness at the age of 64. Shields was the eldest of three daughters born to Frank Tucker Hardwick and Georgia Cumming Hardwick of Rome, Georgia. She grew up in Rome and graduated from Darlington School in 1978. She then graduated from Brenau University, where she played tennis and was a member of the Judicial Board and Chi Omega sorority.
After graduating, she married Jackson Baldwin Harris in Rome on June 25, 1983. Over the next several years, they welcomed three children. Shields and Jack lived in the College Heights neighborhood – the same neighborhood in which Shields grew up — where they remained for 40 years. Shields enjoyed gardening, cooking, and entertaining, and she worked as an aerobics teacher and personal fitness trainer. Her interests and occupation enabled her to focus on the things she loved most: her family and many friends. Shields loved people and saw the best in everyone. She felt compelled to create connections and help others feel welcomed and valued.
In recent years, Shields focused her love and attention on her six grandchildren, whom she adored. Shields was known for her empathy, quick wit, and infectious laugh. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Shields is survived by her loving husband Jack; children, Georgia Wooller (Teddy), Baldwin Chambless (Nick) and Jackson Harris (Kendall); grandchildren, Harris Wooller, Sally Wooller, Oliver Chambless, Lillian Harris, Jack Harris and Beckett Harris; and sisters Mary Owen (Dan) and Frances Hardwick, as well as a niece and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Georgia, and father, Frank.
A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be directed to Darlington School in Rome, Georgia.
