Mr. Johnson, son of Aaron Richmond and Emma Lee Johnson, was born July 1, 1924, in the Texas Valley community of Floyd County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Raymond Griffin Johnson and sister Ruby Nell Johnson Causey.
He was married to Ruth Virginia Thomason who died July 29, 1965. His second wife, Sue Hurley Holland, to whom he was married for 35 years, died December 6, 2002. He is survived by sons, Bennie Richmond Johnson, Rocky Holland and his wife Cheryl, and Randy Holland and his wife Betty, and a special friend Frances Brock. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren include Chad and Kelley Holland, Holley House and Jackson Holland; Chris and Melissa Poston, Lauren and Christopher Poston; Heather and Shane Crandall, and Megan and Matt Wiley, Avery Wiley.
Ralph served in the Philippines as a Staff Sergeant during WWII and was a member of VFW Post 4911, American Legion Post # 5, and The Elks Lodge # 694. He was a member and past president of the Rome Breakfast Optimist Club and a member of Callier Springs Country Club for more than 50 years. Ralph was a faithful member of Rome First Baptist Church and sang in the sanctuary choir for many years. Before joining First Baptist, Ralph served for many years as Music Director of his home church Pleasant Valley North Baptist Church. Ralph worked for 50 years in traveling sales in the paper industry and retired from Dillard Paper Company. All will remember him for his love and enjoyment of life with family, friends, music and golf.
Mr. Johnson’s memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, at the Griffin Memorial Chapel of Daniel’s Funeral Home in Rome. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 at Daniel’s.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Music Ministry of First Baptist Church, P. O. Box 1189, Rome, GA 30162-1189.
