Mrs. Ayers was born September 7, 1926, in Brattleboro, Vermont, daughter of the late Henry Alexander and Sarah Brigham Irwin. She was a homemaker. She served in the Canadian Navy for 2 years. She was a long time resident of Rome and a charter member of Transfiguration Episcopal Church, where her primary Ministry was Altar Guild Chairman. She was secretary of the Foster Grandparent/Senior Companion Group at Northwest Georgia Regional Hospital. She was Co-Founder/Leader of the Rome area Neuropathy Support Group. In 2005 she received an award for Caregiver of the Year. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Mr. Ralph E. Ayers; daughters Susan and Sally Ayers; sister Amy Hollister, best friend Marti Scott.
Survivors include: her children, Brenda Otting, Rome; Mary Felkel, Elkton, Fl.; Robert Ayers (Diane), Rome; Donald Ayers, Rome. Brothers & Sisters, Retired Archdeacon Sidney Irwin; Peggy Hogarth; Pat Irwin, and Helen Hall, all of Canada. Grandchildren, Sally Maddox (Sgt. Shelby) Rome; Susan Collins (Doc) Perry, Ga.; Jeri Thornton (Julian), Jacksonville, Al.; Barbara Compton (Bobo) Silver Creek, Ga.; Brenda Boyd (Tony) Rome; Leize Shirah (Eric), Rome; Jimmy Felkel, Rome. Nine Great-Grand Children; Brandon Maddox, Rome; Tyler Compton, Silver Creek; Jeremy King, Silver Creek; DJ & Sydney Collins, Perry, Ga.; Matthew and Elizabeth Boyd, Rome; Ava and Audrey Shirah, Rome.
A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, November 9th, 2011, at Transfiguration Episcopal Church, in Rome, at 2:00 pm, with Father Don Black officiating.
The family will receive friends after the service in the Fellowship Hall at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Transfiguration Episcopal Church or to a designated fund for medical expenses on behalf of her granddaughter, Sally Maddox, at Coosa Valley Federal Credit Union.
