Dr. John Douglas Clower, Sr., age 78, of Rogers, died March 30, 2010, at the Earlene Howard Hospice Home in Springdale. He was born in Monticello on December 21, 1931, to the late J.D. and Nettie Christine (Rogers) Clower.
John graduated high school in Monticello, then attended the University of Arkansas at Monticello (formerly Arkansas A&M College). He graduated from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, after which he lived in Harrison and was the Assistant County Agent for Boone County. His life’s dream of becoming a physician was never out of his mind; he entered medical school in Little Rock, graduating in 1959, then served his internship at St. Vincent’s in Little Rock. Following this, John served at a hospital in Mescalero, New Mexico, on an Apache Reservation. In 1962, John moved his family to Rogers to begin his medical practice. He retired in 1999.
John was an avid fan of the Razorbacks and tried hard not to miss a game. He served on the Board of Directors of Farmers and Merchants Bank and was a member of the Central United Methodist Church.
John loved people and animals – from gerbils to horses, and was always ready to accept any youngster who needed a home.
John married Peggy Howard on December 21, 1952. She preceded him in death in 2006.
Survivors include his sons, Doug Clower and wife Molly of Little Rock, Mark Clower and wife Kim of Austin, Texas, Bo Clower of Breckenridge, Colorado; grandchildren, Ben of Austin, Texas, Cori and Christina of Little Rock; a brother, Bill Clower and wife Janet of Fayetteville; and many loving relatives.
Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 1, 2010, at Callison-Lough Funeral Home in downtown Rogers. Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Friday in the Chapel at Central United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. Carness Vaughan and Rev. Jim Keith. Burial will follow in Rogers Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Richard Howard, Rich Howard, Brooks Clower, Will Clower, Chris Rogers, and Heath Johnson. Honorary pallbearers are Lloyd Howard, Dr. Russell Riggs, Andy McCurdy, Physicians of Rogers Medical Center, Jerry Felts, Jimmy Hogue, and Vernon Schaefer.
Memorials, in lieu of flowers, should be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
