He was a quiet man, whose life centered around his faith, his family and his friends. He rarely missed a Sunday church service or Wednesday night bible study.
He wouldn't have wanted a lot of attention for his military service (medic in the Korean conflict) or his advanced degrees (doctorate in veterinary medicine and master's in economics); his tenacity in operating a private practice with his wife in Hot Springs, Mont., or the variety of scientific journals he was published in while working in the Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service in the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It wasn't an easy life - but he would have never let you know it.
Fred was born in Pease, Minn., on Feb. 18, 1930, the oldest child of Garrit and Jennie Mae. He married Georgia Lee Brateng, in 1960, with whom he had four children: Jill, Kay, Sue and Joel. He is preceded in death by his brother, James, and survived by his sister, Florence; his wife; his daughters, Jill Rich and Kay (Mike) Langlois; and his two grandchildren.
