“Dick”
A long time resident of Bethesda/Chevy Chase passed away on Sunday June 17th. A beloved husband, father, and grandfather, was born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin on April 7, 1937. Dick is survived by his wife, Dorothy Popick Block, of 52 years, his son Steven Block (Nappy), daughter Mindy Mintz (Dr. Marshall), seven grand children, Michelle, Catherine, Claire, Grant, Blake, Eric, Ellie and many nieces and nephews.
Dick was raised in Harrison, NY, attended Harrison High School and The University of Alabama, where he met Dorothy Popick. After graduation Dick served in the U.S. Army and married Dorothy on March 6th, 1960. They settled in the Washington D.C. area when Dick joined Carter Industrial Laundry, a work clothing rental firm. Dick held many positions during his 22 year tenure, serving as the Executive Vice President when Carter was sold in 1982. He was also active in the National Trade Association and served on the Boards of University Bank and Bank of Columbia. He also immersed himself in the many activities of his seven loving grandchildren.
An avid sports fan, athlete and lover of jazz music, he enjoyed following all of the Washington D.C. teams, SEC football, and worked out for the Brooklyn Dodgers out of high school. As a member of Woodmont Contry Club, he became a championship golfer and served on their Board of Directors.
A member of Adas Israel Congregation and supporter of many charities, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the charity of your choice.
Funeral services will be held graveside at Adas Israel Cemetary on Friday June 22 at 11 am. The family will be receiving friends at 1 PM Friday at the home of Dick and Dorothy. Shive service will be held Sunday June 24 at 7:30 PM at the home.
