Renate was born in Glogau, Germany on October 24, 1931, to Oskar and Klara Biel. With her mother and brother she fled the war in East Germany in 1945, and eventually settled in Eglosheim, West Germany where she met her future husband Guenter Ludewig, also a refugee from East Germany.
In 1955 Renate immigrated to the United States and married Guenter. Together they built a home on Staten Island, NY and raised three children, Peter, Norbert and Monika and enjoyed 51 years of marriage until the passing of her husband in 2007.
Renate and Guenter were active members of the German Club of Clark, NJ, enjoyed dancing, domestic and world traveling, walking her Sheltie dogs, needlework and baking the most incredible cakes and cookies. A devoted mother and spouse, Renate never met a stranger that didn’t become an instant friend.
Renate was an active member of St. Joseph – St. Thomas Catholic Parish in NY and in later years St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church after her move to Melbourne, FL in 2016 where she lived with her daughter Monika and son in law Joseph Bradley.
Renate was predeceased by her parents, her brother Geisbert, her husband Guenter, her son Norbert Ludewig and his wife Patricia (Gallagher). She is survived by her son Peter and his wife Rocio (Moreira), their two sons Christopher and Alex, her grandson Andrew Ludewig (son of Norbert), and her daughter Monika and her husband Joseph Bradley.
Visitation will be held at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Viera, FL on Tuesday April 9, 2024 at 10 am followed by Mass at 11 am.
Renate will be laid to rest with her husband on April 13,2024 at Resurrection Cemetery on Staten Island, NY, following services at 10:30 am at Casey McCallum Rice South Shore Funeral Home on Staten Island, NY.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Renate’s name may be made to St. John the Evangelist Church, or to St. Joseph-St. Thomas Catholic Church.
