Fannie Lou Combs, age 85, went to be with JESUS on Wednesday, June 12th at 12:07am. She left this world for a better one, peacefully, surrounded by loving family members, at Holmes Regional Hospital in Melbourne, Florida. She died after a hard-fought battle with cancer.
She was born on April 14, 1934 in Hawkinsville, Georgia, to Ina Lou and George Melton Vaughn (both deceased). She was the oldest of six children and was raised on a farm in Hawkinsville with no electricity or running water. It was from that humble upbringing that she learned the appreciation for the simple things that GOD blessed her with.
She was invited to local church by neighbors with a Model T car, and it was there that she gave her heart to the LORD at the age of 12. She has been following Him ever since that day.
She attended Pulaski County schools and graduated from Hawkinsville High School in 1952. She remains friends and kept in contact with several of her classmates for most of her life. As a young woman, she worked for the Civil Service as a secretary. After meeting and marrying Vernie Lamar Amerson in 1953, she devoted her life to being wife and a mother to her three children. As an Air Force wife, she moved every three years, and was always very involved in whatever church they were members of at each location. After they moved to Satellite Beach, Florida, her husband Vernie retired from the military, and she lived there ever since. Taking care of her family was her number one job, but after her kids left the nest, she went to work alongside her husband, Vernie at a Tenneco Gas station in Satellite Beach for several years.
After Vernie’s death from cancer in 1983, she continued to work as manager of the Tenneco station. While attending First Baptist Church of Satellite Beach, Fannie Lou met and married Clyde Combs, Jr. She and Clyde had a wonderful life together, full of fun and travel. They visited many places together around the world and one of her favorites was New Zealand. They both became members of First Baptist Church Indialantic where she and Clyde became very involved with their In-Spirit Sunday school class. She was always there to support, encourage and care for her church family, just as she did so lovingly for her own family members. Her definition of “care” was: “I share your sorrow!”
She loved to read, play bridge every Thursday at the Community Center, do word puzzles and garden. She loved violets and anything blooming. Following Christ was her priority in her life and has always tried to instill that faith into all her family and friends. When she was young, a Christian leader taught her how to tell whether something you planned to do was wrong. The leader told her that we should ask ourselves, if JESUS was there, would we do it?
Her favorite Bible verse was Philippians 4:13 – I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Her favorite hymn was “Because He Lives” and it became her theme song throughout her life.
