George R. Austin, 87, of Machesney Park, Illinois, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, November 30, 2024. George was born April 15, 1937, to Lester and Lyla Austin. George proudly served his country in the United States Army, going overseas for the Berlin Crisis. On March 9, 1963, George married the love of his life, Wilma (Farster), who preceded him in death earlier this year. George was a mechanic at at Gib Sonoc in the 60s, until 1976, then going to Ingersoll Milling and Machine, where he later retired from.
George was an avid hunter and fisherman. He especially enjoyed going on hunting and fishing trips with his son and his friends. He also loved to find a great deal at Goodwill and Harbor Freight. He loved spending time with his family, and spoiling his grandkids. George was the first to help anyone, especially his neighbors. He had many stories from when he would help Loves Park Police Officers Fred Horton and Al Little, and would share those stories with those who were close to him.
George is survived by his children, Harold Austin and Tonya Austin; grandchildren, Lynn Austin, David Austin, Harold “Bo” Austin, Leslie Bain, Rodrick Bain, Mike (Nanette) Lewis, Jen (Dave) White, Matt (Holly) Wollitz, Jesse Hoed; great-grandchildren, Megan (Griffin) Eldred, Morgan Lewis, Makayla Wollitz, and Troy Wollitz; great-great granddaughter, Ryan Eldred, Andrew Bean, Nolan Bean; sister-in-law, Donna Austin; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma; daughter, Joann Beck Lewis; son-law, Mike Lewis; parents, Lester and Lyla Austin; brothers, Chuck Austin and Allen “Sonny” Austin; mother and father-in-law, Orval and Helen Clarida.
The family would like to give a special thank you to East Bank Center for the love, care, and support they gave to George, as well as neighbors, Mike and Shannon, Debbie and Chay, Ryan, James, and Julie for all of the help they have given George throughout the years.
