She was born October 10, 1931 in South Heights, daughter of the late Herbert and Cora (Irwin) Newell. A loving and devoted wife and mother, family was most important to Mona. She had a variety of hobbies and interests that included reading, collecting a few select antiques, playing cards, crocheting, putting together picture puzzles, frequenting garage sales and traveling. She had also bred and showed Collies. Mona very much enjoyed the friendships she fostered at the Circle of Friends in Baden.
In addition to her parents, Mona was preceded in death by her husband: Walter Hooton in 1981; her father-in-law: Dan Powell; three sisters: Florence Lang, Esther “ES” McElhaney and Marge Salonus.
Mona is survived by her son and daughter-in-law: Walter and Debbie Hooton, Cornelius, NC; four daughters and two sons-in-law: Ellen and Dwight Taylor, Beaver Falls; Donna Hooton, Economy; Suzy Barker, Rochester; Wendy and Sean O’Brien, Dover, PA; thirteen grandchildren: Dawn Hooton, Shawn (Traci) Hooton, Greg Hopkins, Matt (Megan) Hopkins, Darcy (Mickey) Tyhonas, Adam (Amy) Taylor, J.D. (Lori) Tharp, Nakai Tharp, Bobby (Dena) Barker, Weston Hatch, Emma Hatch, Annie O’Brien and Sophie O’Brien; and 12 great grandchildren.
Friends will be received today, June 21, 2013, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. in the SAUL-GABAUER FUNERAL HOME, INC., 273 Route 68, Rochester, PA (GPS 848 Sunflower Road, adjacent to Sylvania Hills Memorial Park). Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday in the funeral home with The Reverend Martin J. Galbraith, officiating. Private interment will be in Sylvania Hills Memorial Park.
