Michael “Mike” Mazur, Sr., 95, died May 26, 2017. He was born November 5, 1919 in Monessen, son of the late Nicholas and Anastasia Stella (Polomackanich) Mazur. He proudly served his country with the U.S. Army during WWII, receiving three Bronze Service Stars for battle campaigns in Tunsia, Naples-Foggia and Rome-Arno. He retired with over 30 years as a bricklayer and mill worker in Monessen. He also worked as a custodian at the Monessen High School.
Mike was a member and regular contributor for the Monessen Historical Society. He was a member of the Rochester VFW. Mike was a member of the St. Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years: Eva (Praskavich) Mazur in 2008; a son: Edward John Mazur in 1987; and his brother Frank Mazur.
Mike is survived by two sons: Michael (Fran) Mazur, Jr., Sewickley; Kenneth Mazur, Vanderbilt and his fiancé: Mary Anne Sivak; one daughter: Kathleen (Edward) Watson, Murrells Inlet, SC; two grandchildren: Amy Holmes, Scott Watson, two step-grandchildren: Vincent Toman and Benjamin Toman; two great grandchildren; Kaellyn and Kelsey Holmes as well as step-great grandchildren; one brother: George Mazur and one sister: Helen Wujcik, both of Monessen.
In honor of his wishes, Mike will be laid to rest at the National Veterans’ Cemetery of the Alleghenies, 1158 Morgan Road, Bridgeville, PA 15017. The Committal Service and Military Honors will be 11 a.m., Friday, June 2, 2017 at the cemetery pavilion. Arrangements are by the SAUL-GABAUER FUNERAL HOME, INC.
